I set my vvl off point at 5200rpms off throttle. Vvl onset is very smooth and the engine never falls out of vvl on wot pulls between gears.

It being 30 degrees would not have helped keep that thing cool. It gets proper hot and it needs the fan. Just saying this may only be part of the problem. The over-volting is your #1 suspect.
