The thing next to the AEM unit is the stock power transistor. All it does is amplify the ignition signal. It is designed to be a serviceable component, so they didn't place it inside the ECU.

I used the app alot the previous summer. I loved being able to see when outputs trigger, helped a lot when I configured the water injection.

I really enjoyed the logging feat...

Yes, old capacitors first needs to be desoldered and the new ones installed and soldered.

You don't have to, but it is a good idea to replace the caps since pushing 20-30 years is hard on them. ...
