Check all of your fluid levels too, it could be low on Power Steering fluid that is causing the noise. Also check the belts.

There's a random NX1600 in great shape running around Pottstown, just saw it early this week. The NX is rare but not as desirable, a face only mom could love is it's problem. An ugly little spud......

What's wrong with the current trans? If you want better gearing (for N/A purposes) then go with a B13/B14 trans as Storm mentioned.
