I'd say your mileage is pretty good. If you drive 16 miles a day for 5 days thats 80 miles divided by 3.22 is ~25mpg. Unless its completely highway miles, thats pretty good.

You are correct, there are upper and lower chains/tensioners. That doesn't sound stupid at all. At this point I actually am leaning towards one of the lower guides as the culprit.
