I'm sure I lost shims down the timing chain side, is that okay?

You should really pull the oil pan(s) and get them out. Failing that maybe a magnet on the lower oil pan could keep them from clogging in the oil pick-up or getting tossed around somehow by the crank.

I lost some down the timing chain side. I had to drain the oil and strain it through an old shirt. Then had to remove the lower oil pan to find one that was on top of the oil pick up. Finally removed the cams to find the last one hiding in a little pocket of oil in the head.

Someone had put a ton of sealant on the oil pan, so I found out I would rather remove and replace cams than mess with an oil pan again. It's a pain but better than chancing a ruined engine.

I forgot, finding the shims was just the beginning. They are not all the same size, so can't just go back anywhere. If the rocker arms are incorrectly shimmed they will wobble at high RPM and you will be doing this all over again.

Here is one of the threads I used.
HOW TO: Measure Valve Shim Heights (Pics) - SR20 Forum

There is better thread that explains how to adjust the valves with a digital indicator from Harbor Freight. It's one I mostly followed and is simpler but I can't find that now. I may have saved it on Word though.

Well got my car running finally...let Stefan at ASP take my car in to build Mike K 4-1 headers... Also picked up a ASP budget header to roll around on until I get all my turbo stuff.

Nice job. Was it just the rocker arms?
