update... full steam ahead
here's the problem...

the smallest i could get on the cylinder was 91.8mm so there's a ~.3mm lip where the fire ring is actually overhanging the top of the cylinder.

the mazworx/pe gasket is not large enough for the bore on my block. rather than machining the pistons to match the gasket were ordering up a custom gasket from Cometic. my machinist will take the necessary measurements and contact Cometic tomorrow. should take ~2 weeks to get it.
the head is done (no de-shrouding) once the gasket gets here we're ~ 2 hours from completion

never effing mind
this shiiiets getting old/fast.
just got a call from bud's."a salesman" at Cometic said they would make a gasket to fit. today when the salesman went to engineering with the request, he was told "no, absolutely not,. 91mm is the largest that will work". so, we're back to square 1. the maz/pe gasket will have to do. the pistons will be removed and machined down a few thou around the top edge to fit.
if i had to do over again i'd go 90mm, that's it! after all, thats what the gasket was designed for to start with

That sounds good! Id honestly be very interested in one of these cometics aswell. When you figure out if they are willing and for how much please let me/us know. I would buy one and I know of a few other that would possibly aswell. This might very well help get the price down.

Oh whoops guess I was too late.... I don't understand why they wouldn't be able to do the slightly larger bore. Guess their firing rings are just to thick/wide possibly

Another advantage of running a stepped sleeve as apposed to the flat deck Benson block.

Here is my AEBS 92mm block. My pistons at TDC sit below the sleeve.

Teal, what compression are your pistons? Your dome looks way different than mine at 12.5:1.

Maybe you have deeper reliefs?

So with the stepped sleeve block, what headgasket is used?

Anyone make a water gasket for the VE? Anyone gonna o-ring a block until a proper 92mm headgasket is created?

You can use any decent multilayer gasket with the stepped block. The step just provides an extra tight seal around the cylinders.

Mazworx now does this procedure as well and looks really really good. My block is currently there getting a sleeve install w/ stepped block. Im keeping it an 86mm bore so ill be using a stock oem VET metal gasket. Should more than hold what im looking to make especially with the 1/2" headstuds.

stepped vs flat
from what i understand, the main concern expressed by Cometic, and my machinist, is the space between the cylinders. take another mm off the 91mm gasket and there just isn't enough meat to guarantee a good seal between the cylinders. i still don't have a good feeling about the reliability of a 92mm bore for obvious reasons. once this motor is in and running i'm gonna start on the spare block. it'll probably be a budget 87mm build.
