received 1 new 8969 Thursday. did a temp hookup replacing the exhaust 1. was about to take the car out for a test spin when the clouds opened up a deluge of rain. being that the car was washed and cleaned last week i decided to forgo getting her all nasty again. so it'll be Monday again (weather permitting) before she's pulled outta the garage. seems i treat the bitch like my old scooters.
remember last summer when the engine would start then die (the 8 second trick)? 1 of the 8969's
(i think it was the exh) was the cause. this time the exh 8969 was set to OD2 (odd firing 2 cylinder) on the dyno last month. somehow this d-rpm switch keeps changing settings on its own, thats why i replaced it.

so...i'm ready to unplug the solenoids and run it on the freaking small lobes
i'm stumped. to recap, runs fine on small lobes. it matters not what the switches are set to. when that rpm hits i can feel the difference momentarily, then its right back to feeling like the small lobes or worse. in fact the engine seems to stutter and not want to rev till it hits like 6k. then it revs good and never any increase in exh noise. if i unplug both solenoids it runs smoother throughout the rev range. i'm beginning to wonder if the cam shimming job is somehow not right. i recall him stating he only had to use a couple shims from the ktm kit i took in to the shop. hmmm.
now what, brainiacs?

ohh man. ive been there before man, racking my brain.

im stumped as to why and what.

im curious why it feels like it cross's over then drops back down to the low lobes. i wonder if its actually doing that.

stratton.

Actually you should check on the valve lash again since that can play major role on what you are experiencing since my friends here had same experience here on some 184-c without proper valve lash calibration... 184-c made less power than N1 here...

What's the highest rpm you have switched the cams at? Try them at about 6.5k or so. I'm switching mine @ 6k and I believe cory's is higher.

i've read of this happening if the lash is not right. should it be set on the loose or tight end of the specs? or dead nuts? if i set it dead nuts on the small lobes, the big lobes ought to be correct, right? or should i measure both big and small then split the difference?

i've tried every setting from 3800 to 6k. ya, 6k rpm is about where it starts feeling like i think it should. but i still don't get the badass exhaust noise from the ex cam opening @ any rpm

thanks for your input, guys

tight ex valve clearances
i've taken some preliminary measurements. this was done by rotating the motor so the lobe was pointing as close as possible to 180* away from each rocker. just a WAG but it seems the machine shop went about trying to set the intake side to .20mm and the ex to .30mm
this is what i came up with moving left to right (cyl 1-4) for each rocker.

should be~.20mm IN

#1 IN .17mm/.20mm
#2 IN .19mm/.21mm
#3 IN .22mm/.22mm
#4 IN .18mm/.20mm

should be~.40mm EX

#1 EX .25mm/.28mm
#2 EX .29mm/.29mm
#3 EX .29mm/.29mm
#4 EX .29mm/.29mm

question of the day..... would the tight clearances on the ex cam cause it to not activate the big lobes?? (say absolutely:rofl

cerveza...modelo especial
