VVL tone
I have noticed the sound of most camswitch's vary drastically. Some folks are very distinct while others are almost non existent. I am strictly talking about the people who have both solenoids switching simultaneously. So, what is it? Is it all in the exhaust size? Btw, im running a 3 inch hotshot intake ran warm air with ssac header and a 60mm catback(2.36 inches).

I am thinking MAYBE it has to do with tuning as well. VVl tends to run a bit lean at the VVL points and you can see if you do a dyno run. If you tune and add fuel around those points (like I had to do) well I was using sr16ve ecu with EMS, then it would not sound as drastic/loud.

Someone else can confirm. Not sure the fuel is mapped for like Calum ecu etc at VVL points.

Peace

The exhaust size has a lot to do with it as most of the sound comes from the exhaust tone.

You should be able to hear it regardless.

Here is my car on the dyno a long while back. 3" intake arm and 3" exhaust.

My wideband reads 13.4 at WOT.I could up the fuel pressure a few psi , but it should be alright. I also have a cheap-o mini 3inch air filter from autozone(using until i cut my intake arm-clearance issues). It is like the regular cone filter but condensed. Could it cause the camswitch to not be as loud(muffling it)? I may sound ricer, but I just want it to be more distinct.

in that vid... what was your redline/limiter? and what rpm was the cams switching?

I've got a similar setup 3"WAI and the 60mm hks exhaust coming off a 2.5"SSAC. My cam switch is noticeable if I'm over 1/2 WOT I'd guess, I know if I creep the rpm's up to the switch point the change is barely noticeable. WOT you can hear it a bit more but it's still not as dramatic as that video I think. Cams are set to switch together at 4800.

havn't really played with it a lot yet, only had the vvl a few weeks now. Remember running it really high once like 6800 or something which was just annoying as you had about 2 seconds of vvl before shifting.

Do you know of anyone actually tuning and showing the difference between the different shift points? I've been kind of curious about that. read some stuff regarding individual cam switch but nothing really showing what the difference is at 4600 vs 5200 vs 6800...I acn't test it now as I'm babying the car for a tank to see what my fuel econ is granny driving. It sucks spirited 20-24mpg but I've got a pretty aggressive tune. probably take another week or so to burn through the remaining $25 in the tank....

My set up in my sig, and as i mentioned before you need to run the car on a dyno to find out where is the best rpm for your vvl points. That is what i did but mods are different so 5100 for both cams may not suit you. Below 5100rpm the car lost power. above 5100rpm the car was not making the best use of the powerband.

1.the hks sport catback is a pretty damn quiet exhaust compared to a vrs 3". i'd venture to guess what you're hearing is more intake than exhaust. on my Ve with the 3" vrs and either a hotshot cai or the warm air setup i'm currently running, the exhaust switch is MUCH louder than the intake. this is with N1 cams.
2. and it's much easier to "separate" the noise differences (in VS ex) when they switch independently. give that a try. mine are switching @ 5300in and 5800ex.
