Just thinking, it also depends on what your definition of "built" is I suppose.. many people have different ones especially when it comes to our cars..

Are you coming to the Convention or too far for you?

LoL, too far. . .

His can do all that as well. It is perfectly turn key and super functional if required to do any aforementioned tasks.

Thanks Kyle, sorry I didn't see this tag sooner.

My VE at the peak ran about 205 hp, but I detuned it down to about 190 for road racing purposes and daily driving. I'd rather have reliable and fast vs on the edge and only marginally faster. The VE was swapped into the G20 in 2003 when JustinP10 owned it, and while it was probably not the FIRST SR20VE swap into a Nissan, it was probably the first documented swap into a P10 and helped the VE movement into what we see today (https://web.archive.org/web/20050426010839/http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/february03/neo/). I bought the car in 2006 and she's been my weekend warrior ever since.

Its now 2016 and I still have the same motor in the car, and since the initial swap I've only ever cracked it open to add N1 cams and Custom Steel cam gears (set to +4/+4). I've of course swapped the car over to an AEM V2 standalone, ASP Header, exhaust system upgrades, switched to a MAP setup (no more MAF!), coil on plug, and a 6 speed, but the motor itself is just as reliable as when we installed it back in 2003. I drove it as my DD up until 2 years ago when I decided I needed a better AC car for my then at the time girlfriend and her son. Shortly after that I turned her into a full caged track car that I still track even now, she gets at least 14 track weekends a year on a slow season, upwards to 20 on a packed season!

My only major gripe is/was the 5 speed's 3rd gear, I've blown out 2-3 over the past 13 years, which is why I'm happy to say I'm very pleased with the 6 speed. So far its MUCH better than the 5 speed by leaps and bounds.

Even though the car is caged, I still have her registered and drive her in the cooler months to and from work because, well race car! Here's a video from last year right after installing the 6 speed setup and I used this event to break in the clutch and HORRIBLY dried out cracked BFG Rivals lol:

Which reminds me I need to update my build thread... LOL

I can't stress THIS enough, I'm at 236k and the motor was installed probably around 125k range on the chassis, and she still pulls strong. You just can't cheap out on parts, quality of build items, etc.

Not to put words in Rodney's mouth, but I think he's referring to all the superstar 2.2l and up engines. From where I sit on the sidelines, I gotta agree with him that there does seem to be an inordinate amount of failures on all these overbored/sleeved/big crank engines. Obviously, many of these guys were chasing a number at the track, and were happy to toss thousands and thousands of dollars at the engine bay, while gutting the rest of the car.

The real question is, what does it take to get in the mid 200hp range, while staying DD friendly. And that means having a decent idle, making enough power below 4k, and staying together for a few years.

Like 250WHP? I guess it depends what you consider DD friendly.

Will I see you at the NJ convention?

A VE by itself will have a decent idle. Not an issue on VE engines, DE big boy cam engines will have a problem with the idle because the overlap would be so intense, the engine would require a higher RPM idle.

The biggest problem is cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap cars that want to fast on the cheap, because of cheap owners. Not picking on anyone, but that is a very clear truth.

This is exactly what I am talking about, i dont know where some of you guys have been but 195whp was...
Stock VE block top to bottom but add

N1 cams
Ecu
Maxima maf
Good header

Thats far from built. I had this setup with a fujitsubo header and drove the car 100k miles in 2 years. That is not a built motor.

Chris got it all out there with his post,
I remember all the formulas that were this crank, this bore, this headwork, and you get this power.

The problem is I hear none of that now and I do not know of a single VE BUILT that has held up.
