I agree that at first it doesn't feel like that big of a difference, until you go without it. A friend of mine was amazed at the difference between the two on his first ride last night. Consequently I drove his DE last night and you can just feel that it's not making the same power, while minimal in the low end, it really stands out up top. He's running a basic setup with a HS gen4, WAI, and a 2.5in exhaust no cat, which gives him the nudge in the mods category.
I would like to see if I can get another local DE guy to do a side by side pull from 2nd to 4th (shutting down as you hit 4th). My VE is probably one of the lower performers, as such it should be a decent comparisson against a Bolt on DE.
I think in the end, if your goals are a modest N/A 170whp, there is really no appeal to the VE, sure it's a great setup, but a cam'd DE is no slouch and can be just as rewarding at those power levels. Not to mention you can make that much on the DE with less money invested. That being said, the VVL is addicting, even at ~170whp, and the potential for 200whp+ is always tempting.
