I am about to FINALLY purchase a VE
So i'm pretty stoked, finally making the jump to an SR20VE which is what I've wanted for like 2 years now.
I have a fairly open-ended question for you guys though;

Say you have about $400 dollars leftover after purchasing your "new" SR20VE engine, what else do you buy with the extra $400 to improve performance?
I figure while the engine is out and everything, now would be the time to dump the rest of my "car funds" into the VE.

Thanks!

Oh and by the way, my cars a 1991 P10.

edit: There's a pic of my P10. Soon to have a VVL in there

I'd say save a couple more bucks and get a decent ecu like nismotronic then you can start upgrading things like cams header etc.

Depends on what ECU you already have.

If you are planning to run it with the DE ECU,
If you are planning to run it with the VE ECU,
If you get Nismotronic,

Nah, but seriously, get a decent ECU, you'll unlock quite the amount of ponies with it

A good tune is worth more than any other upgrade by itself. Save up and get the Nismotronic and do not look back. Learn to tune and you will have a great running car that you can get the most out of with any setup you have.

Well, seems like the general consensus is to go with the Nismotronic ECU.

Something like this?;
Chipped B13 SR20DE ECU, NismoTronic - Nissan ECU Tuning

Unfortunately I have run into one more problem though guys

I live over in SoCal and of corse, the smog test is infamous over here. I did a lot of research using SEARCH and what not last night and it seems like the SR20VE is illegal in CA?

Most of the threads I found were from people trying to swap a VE into a sentra though. Does anyone know if it's legal to swap a VE in the G20? I'm hoping since the G20 actually came w/ the VE in some models it's legal @.@

Otherwise I know I can resort to some drastic measures but I don't want to kill my VE mixing and matching DE "smog gear" or worrying about swapping the engine back every 2 years lol.
Last year I had to take the G20 to a star smog location which did a pretty in-depth test. I had to swap out my short ram intake just to pass the visual and that was a minor headache but something like engine swapping over a smog is a bit over my scope ..

This is what you want>>>> NismoTronicSA Package, NismoTronic - Nissan ECU Tuning. I believe they just released a new board aswell. As of the smog testing in cali I am of no help there. Dave

Hey Dave, thanks for the link.

Yeah it's a real bummer. I've been looking forward to going VE for awhile and now I am finally ready to make the leap but I totally forgot about the giant PIA that is CA smog.

Don't let that stop you. You live in the modified car capital of the world. You just have to make some friends and know somebody to turn a blind eye to the visual. Passing OBD1 is easy. There's probably currently 30 VE's cars running around Socal. If they can do it so can you.

Hey man, first of all I really appreciate your input on this.
I was starting to get really bummed out that my final set back to getting the VE of my dreams ( lol ) was CA smog laws

I just talked to my buddy on the phone who has a 01 civic with a b16b swapped into it. I know he gets his car passed but I was surprised to find out today he also is required to go to a star smog location like myself.
He said he pays somebody off to pass his car but he doesn't want to recommend me to that shop because the guy gets " super sketchy and tells him not to recommend anyone or talk about his shop to anyone".
Still, that shows that maybe I can find a star smog shop that can turn a "blind eye" on the visual, so to speak

There are people in Cali that have "multiple family members" and don't need to smog their vehicles because of it. Just saying lol
