Thread: Oil Temp and Pressure and Water temp probe installation Q's

I just bought some new gauges for Oil pressure and temperature. I know I install the pressure gauge on a T fitting with the factory sensor, but I am not sure on the Temp sensor. I think it should go in the oil pan from what I have seen but I want to clarify this.

The Water temps sensor I am going to put where the factory sensor for the gauge is. I have seen the plates that put it on the passenger side front water neck going to the radiator, is that a better location?

Factory water temp sensor location is ideal (right after the water pump before it heads down the recirculation loop or the radiator loop). Those sandwich plates put the sensor about 4" downstream from the factory location in the radiator loop which doesn't get real flow until the thermostat opens up. This position is completely adequate, but no need if you're willing to use the stock location.

I don't have enough experience with oil temp sensors to help with that part.

I have the intake manifold off at the moment and the neck where the coolant sensors are located is easily removed at this time. So I figured I do not need the sensor for the gauge so I can put it there. Thanks for your input.

i've only noticed a slight difference in temps between the water neck (where top rad hose goes on) and the ecu

as for the oil temp sender, that does not work well in a T my friend has it setup that way an it barely works.. your best bet maybe to have a fitting welded in the lower pan.

I too removed the oem water temp and used the stock location. Pretty sure I had to use an adapter for the threads or retap it.

Oil temp yes in the sump. The theory I went by is that you want to measure the temp of the oil that is "about to work" instead of oil that already worked.

Sounds good. I knew the threads were different in the water neck, i will see if i can find a small adapter, otherwise i will re-tap it. There is not much room over there and the sensor is pretty long, so i do not want it sticking out too far.

Just re-tap it. You're going from bspt to npt, and there will be very very few shavings. Put the oil temp sender in the oil pan.
