Thread: Question about aftermarket/forged con rods

Basically I have a set of rods here from Eagle and there is no oil Gallery to squirt oil on the thrust side of the cylinder wall like the oem rod has, I also checked with a Manley set and it doesn't have this oil gallery either. All the pictures I can find online of the rods appear to show a lack of this oil gallery.

Why would this be? Is this normal?

the Eagle set is CRS5365N3D, each rod has CRS-5365-NI (could be N1)

Has anyone run rods like this without issue?

Its going in a VE block and its got oil squirters, but I seem to think the squirters only work above a certain oil pressure 40psi irrc. Also the squirters spray under the piston dome whereas the rod squirts onto the cylinder wall thrust side.

What are your thoughts/experience on this?

It makes them cheaper to produce, and it was potentially an oversight in design.

Not really. Good quality rods sold to informed communities have these oil squirters. The SR20 community has not traditionally demanded them, and because no one is making a big stink about it, not many of the aftermarket pistons provide this. Although some do.

Keep in mind, this squirter doesn't oil the piston wall, it cools the piston and oils the wrist pin.


With the block-based oil squirters, you have absolutely no need for the rod-based oil squirters. The block-based units do a better job at cooling the piston when it needs it and lubricating the wrist pin when it needs it without the constant drop in oil pressure you see from the rod-based squirters.


You are mistaken. The rod-based squirters are not designed to lubricate the piston wall. Is it not a 45-degree angle squirter. It shoots mostly vertical.

I measured the angle of the rod oil hole to be about 13 deg from the rod vertical on the rod(s) I had.

The oil holes on the con rod crank journal are horizontal when the crank is at TDC or BDC.

It is my understanding that the oil only squirts when the journal hole lines up with this oil hole. I can't see it squirting otherwise unless there was a channel in the bearing like on the mains.

So oil is squirting when the crank is at some angle I believe it squirts onto the cyl wall on the power & intake stroke and squirts under the piston on the compression & exhaust stroke. Two diametrically opposed holes.

Anyway I didn't feel good about installing it without the oiler and so I went ahead and drilled them myself. its a 1mm hole. Had to use cobalt bits. Little tricky to do this yourself. I made a jig to hold all 4 rods the same in the drill press so this worked good and I was able to get them consistent & centered nicely.
