Thread: Broken valve guide

Hey guys.

So I thought my motor had a bearing knock, but after pulling it apart I discovered that wasn't the case. Instead what I found was a piece of valve guide had broken off and got into the cylinder. It caused a bit of damage tot he piston and combustion chamber, but it think both are salvageable.

I'll post pics up a bit later.


Now, what would cause this to happen and what can I do to ensure it doesn't happen again? Which guides should I use to replace them?

Since I have to get into the head now, it would be a shame to not take the opportunity to upgrade something. I'm thinking bigger intake valves. But I hear horror stories about supertech. Any other brand that is proven to last with high rpms?

Where are these horror stories regarding supertech? And was it really the brand or just user/install error?

I have sold hundreds of supertech gear including valves with no issues what so ever.

I don't think there are any other brands that make valves for VE

It would be great if supertech valves are ok. But I've read threads like "why the f&$* would you install supertech..." Etc and it makes me nervous.

Is your head ported? Maybe it was nicked or damaged during the process?

Ive seen supertech valve guides on an s2000 f20c motor seize up a valve and then bammmmmmm there went the motor. I like to stick with oem stuff when it comes to valve guides and so on and I dont bother replacing them if they dont need them.

Yes the head is ported. With the valve guides cut as you see in the photos. It's been this way for about 4or 5 years now and this is the first time it gave me any problems like this.

Where would I find oem valve guides for the ve? I've started looking at supertech and k-liners but there is hardly any information available it seems.

I have to redo valve seats too if the valve guides are changed? And hopefully I haven't bent a valve.

What kind of valves do you have currently? They don't look stock. I don't see the factory stamping.




As far as I know, the Supertech valves are the only game in town. I'm pretty sure a lot forum members are running with them. I haven't heard anything bad about them for sr20ve application.

Ive personally dealt with alot of cylinder heads using Supertech parts and never have they failed once. Alot of the times, its install error. Valve guides are a bit tricky for removing and install and if you dont have the right tools or the right machine shop doing it, it can be catastrophic.
