Thread: What do you folks think about this VE?

This is how it came, shipped on this pallet. Wondered what everyone else thought before I spend money on a VE.

I've seen worse... I'd be scared to turn it over though.. just that little bit of rust on that one lobe tells me there's possibly rust elsewhere. rust + moving parts = no more mileage

but like I said, I've seen worse, and that motor is still running. Is there a start up warranty? I'd compression/leak down test if possible. And/or fill it up with a light weight oil with the valve cover off, and soak the cams in oil, pull the plugs out, and turn it over by hand maybe first. I'd hate to see the cylinder walls.. they're sometimes the most rusty depending on which valves are open while the engine sits

The motor was bought a few years ago for $1,700, shipped. No ECU. The shipper claimed they picked only good motors.

I was wondering about the rust on the big lobes, looks like the VVL might have not been working right?

not so bad... like said before take the plugs out and check things out... after that I would either just crank it over slowely at first with fresh oil and even squirt some down the cylinders with a tube with a bend at the end so you can spin it to coat the cylinder walls.Then a whole lot with whatever power tool you prefer after your confortable with what you see in the bores.. drain oil and filter and repeat. ive done this with a few of my fathers old mercury outboards he collects. It works well but obviously this is a different scenerio

other than that you can take the cams out and polish them with some light strips of sandpaper as evenly as possible. As for the cylinder walls the extreme answer is to tear the engine down if its too junky to do what I suggested before but im betting its not too bad

1700$ wtf I buy sr20ve engines for 750$ all the time........ouch dude. Get your Geiger counter out and check that sucker....looks like it could be a flood motor. Some of these engine importer are sending us all the refuge from the earthquake/flooding.

Looks like a miko special to me.. over charged an came with no extra parts.

That rust will come right off when the engines runnin jus pour some oil over the lobes before starting. .

I would recommend you to put new oil, and as @lynchfourtwenty put some oil over the lobes before starting, run it for a while and change oil and filter again... i would do oil changes every 1000 miles... so all the crap inside the engine can come out... mine looked like the previous owner didnt know that oil could be changed once in a while and now its working great!

Under the VC it looks a bit too "bronze" IMO. Mine doesn't look anything like that

rust forms real quick on bare metal and this engine has been sitting for a year. depending on what the weather was like you can have a gallon of water in the oil pan from condensation alone.

at work we seal all our transmissions with air tight caps and moister absorbing systems when we know they are going to sit in a warehouse for a while

I agree with just running the engine but like stated before lube her up with some fresh oil everywhere and do a few drain and fills
