I guess those of us that paid attention to the

(I'm in a difficult financial situation right now)


part of the post.

For now, let's be more objective and go with these.


Options:
- Replace bearings with ACL ones, in case there is no serious damage to the crank or anything else.
- Replace whole bottom, I may have a complete bottom end which could be swapped over (have a set of SR16 pistons I could trow in there too).
- Sell all bolt ons/aftermarket parts and go back to stock (SR20DE RR).


Option 1: This is the cheapest way, and the most PITA way. You better make sure nothing is damaged or the new bearings will be wrecked even sooner. Working on an engine underneath is not very fun. regardless of a lift or on your back.

Option 2: This is silly because I think putting pistons in a block without a fresh bore for the rings is pointless. That is machine work, and taking it all apart. Ultimately your choice. It is doomed to fail from the beginning, however.

Option 3: The more stuff you sell that is VE related benefits the back to stock DE route. If you already have one, why not. If you don't have one, then how cheaply can you get one?

That's how I see it until more information is provided.

Every situation is different and nothing is as simple as it seems choosing DE or VE because of the popularity contest that will ensue.

i vote for throwing those sr16 pistons into the DE block and then using the DE block with the VE head.

The block should be decked (or at very least checked to make sure it is 100% level), the head should be skimmed (or at very least checked to make sure it is 100% level), the bores should be honed for the new rings for the SR16 pistons. Old glaze needs to be removed from the bore for the rings to function correctly. Don't forget to drill the hole for the VE oiling channels!

That adds a LARGE number to the dollar cost for machine work to be done properly. Nissan would never sell you an assembled engine without doing all of those things for you guys so why in the world would you want to assemble an engine in a half-assed way only to get half-assed results or a severely reduced life in the engine.

I know everyone loves a good ol VE, maybe the voice of reason is being over-ran here, again. Good luck in whatever you choose, @Nicoxis

Yes it all should be but could be done without. Its a simple budget build. If the block looks clean I would throw in the SR16's (no notching required since there are no oil squirters). I have done this before with perfect results. Comp was pegging over 300 across the board and the motor is still running strong to this day. I was in a financial bind as well as the time and took my chances. I saw the hatchmarks were visible and said fuck it. Didn't deck the block, just cleaned off the material left from the composite gasket.

There is no way in hell I would throw in a DE back in.

Throw sr16 pistons in that de rr block and drop the ve headnin there.

Did that to mine except i have an older de block so I have an 8cw crank. Just got bearings and rings, dropped in sr16 pistons. I Don't regret it all. Only "block prep" was make sure it was clean and light hone with the stones. Almost 2years later in my dd high comp motor, no issues.

Dont go backwards.

I may have missed something, but my impression was get car running as cheaply as possible with the intention of selling in a few months. To me that means put the original DE back in and move on. We all love these cars but sometimes you have to let go.

BTW, this option allow op to keep the VE and SR16 pistons to be built down the road when he is in a better financial position

Same exact situation here. Fel-pro hg, rings, bearings, oil, brakleen, rags, silicone, stones voila! Unless Im really screwed up financially, I would never go backwards to a DE. I love power too much. Just make sure the crank is within spec and keep on rucking!
