Thread: Sr20Ve making noise

Hi guys i need some knowing what to do with my Sr20ve , recently my car has been making some type noise like clicking noise i got it checked and the lifters were ok so it wasnt lift clicking but just recent i changed my clutch and took it out for a spin and took the car up 2 8k RPM going to a store down the street when i turn the car back on it sounded like i had ROD knock any clue in what could of happen? need help ?

The SR20VE doesn't have any lifters. It's a mechanical shaft mounted rocker arm system so you only need to check the lash.

If the topend was untouched, check the tensioner. Worst case would be you bent some valves since it's not a good idea to rev the stock cam and springs above 7500 rpm.

There are no lifters (HLA) in a VE.

You didn't open up the valve cover and mess with a anything ever?

I had a ticking noise when we re-did my head gasket, it needed a re-shimming/clearance issue

Maybe a video and a better discription would help?

Rod knock tends to get louder and faster with more rpm, load will aggravate it also..

But if the sound an speed of sound stay the same under rpm an load then it might not be rod knock. Also alot of the time knock sound can be heard behind the header or manifold so listen in that area, if its comin from higher up id check chain tensioner and recheck the rockers/cams for anything broken or out of place..

For shits an giggles since u just did the clutch you should see if the noise is there with the clutch pushed in. Is the engine/trans plate there? An both dowel pins? Ive seen where the pressure plate would actually hit the inside of the bell housing from not using the plate or have missing dowel pins.

iv been meaning to ask, what is the clearance spec for the lash on ve's?
iv had my n1s in for almost 2 years, haven't checked the it yet

Miko posted the ve FSM awhile back, specs are in it. Look in the sr20 manifesto under the ve section. Good stuff
