Thread: Center feed SR20VE intake manifold design

A VE is only making 135HP? Is it choked up? (No exhaust?)

I was doing some reading over on one of the K-series forums and they had a center feed intake manifold made by a guy that went by Joe I think that made 14or 17whp over 64mm Kinslers (K26 motor I think). I though ITB setups always made the most power (since they usually dyno 15-30whp or so over plenum manifolds).

This center feed thing sounds cool. Anywhere from almost the same power as ITB or even more power than an ITB at an on average below cost of a good ITB setup

If your talking about Joe McCarthy yeah he makes some nice stuff but he's got some really crazy claims as far as gains go.

I know the center feed Plenum will make more power no doubt, but it just sucks for street applications. Maybe we could make some crazy cowl hoods to clear it and keep the intake under the hood lol

In my opinion injectors has to be top mounted we tested bottom mount injectors on a custom IM here with bad results too!! On the other side I think the angle of the TB on the plenum its very crucial and the intake has to go out of the hood like a rece car!!! I dont think that it will work on maf load ECU systems so nismotronic or stand alone its necesary to take full advantage of these Intake setup!!
We have take the xcessive plenum on stock ported runners to 313whp on a 2.4L and up to 129.8 MPH trap speeds with the 3.5" intake comming out of the headlight. So for me its a really good option!!
But its really good to have other options available on the market for the comunity of the VVL's
We will be able to compare the Xcessive plenum VS a 50mm ITB system on the 2.4L so we will have a solid base to compare how the intake was flowing!!

Injector placement: theres alot more to it than,, on the top, or on the bottom of the intake manifold,
How and where it's angled into the airflow and the distance from the cylinderhead,
also the line of site to the valves (how straight the manifold port is).
My idea (the picture at the start of this thread),
Has the injector pointing directly at port centerline at the manifold mating surface to the cylinderhead.
And there's always the stock injector location on the base manifold close to the head,,
for the less adventurious.

I Spy moar valve in 54C. Clearly volume and flow is on the VE side along with a cleaner divider (HLA on the highport head cause the largest problem with the 54C head) Nothing a bit of porting cannot change slightly since the head casting on the 54C seems rather larger than normal so there is a good bit of cylinder meat to hog away at. Nothing we can do about the amount of meat in between since the solid lifters are so deep in the head, this is the failure of the 54C head. I have seen folks flow a worked head more than a VE, but it takes way more effort that could be utilized elsewhere.

All in all VE > 54C.

If the 54c is the typical early SR20 head, (not familiar with all the Nissan head #'s),
The center divider is wider to accomidate the hydraulics for the forked cam follower, when they did that they also moved the port walls outward to go around the this obstruction.
This port to the unimformed looks good, but now if you port the heck out of it, the port looses velocity big time, ideally you want the port to be as straight as possible,
not with a big bow out to the sides half way down the port,
the ports to each intake valve bend out and around and come back to the valve seats.

When I first saw an early SR20 head, I said wow this looks good,
untill I looked down the port and saw this horrible design with the big deviation in the middle.

The SR20VE is a better Cleaner design,
even though it's not as downdraft as the earlier head !
