Thread: Advice on bottom end rebuild. how far to go?

Looking for advise from anyone who has replaced pistons in a Sr20ve here.

I'm about to strip down a VE ( it was going but kilometers travelled unknown ), to replace the head and intake manifold with improved versions.

I have decided to replace the pistons with some sr16ve N1 pistons to increase the compression a bit. This has expanded to rings, acl race bearings, and front and rear seals.

I know i have to notch these pistons and will be getting them balanced, and hoping to only have to hone the bores.

My question is, what else (without going to an all out re-build) would you consider, and what (if any) extra machining work should i be considering?

I'm thinking maybe chain, guides, water pump, and check oil pump. Polish crankshaft.

Will be a daily street driven motor, with Nismotronic SA controlling the lot.

get the rotating assembly balanced, forged rods for good insurance, valve springs, new oil pump. Shouldn't need to hone unless the motor was hurt before.

It is a slippery slope, ive been through it. I ended up doing a full rebuild and then some. You could get away with just swapping pistons and rings, no need for rods as the stock ones will be fine. Water pump is extra insurance, and any other maintenance type parts/seals/gaskets. The motor was running before so nothing crazy will have to be done.

It is always a good idea to have the rotating assembly balanced, i dont think it was that expensive, but not needed.. Have them balance the flywheel by itself, then with everything else together, including the crank, crank pulley, pulley spacer, keyways, pistons, and rods, including rings and wrist pins.

Yea sounds like you got it. But id question BlueRB, whenever installing fresh rings I would always hone. Just to that you break the glaze and give the rings a chance to seat property.

thanks for the response's guys. although its not the bottom end, should the head studs be replaced as well, if a new heads going on?

What octane fuel available to you? Your motor will detonate with 16ve pistons on even 95 octane...

i'm going the n1 piston route with a metal gasket, the head is ported a bit, and n1 cams. should be ok that way. i run on aussie 98ron, which is usa's 93ron (i think). n1's compression ratio and cp 12.5 to 1 has been done here before.
