Craked the Chain Cover upon removal - what now?
I was trying to remove the chain cover to take care of a leak and cracked it on the top middle as some idiot (who owned this motor before) packed crazy amounts of RTV grey at the bottom. I still cannot remove the cover as the bottom is stuck like crazy - this is with the head on and the upper oil pan on as well.

Now, I have a spare DE that I can take the cover from, but I heard there are some differences in oil pumps, what do you guys think?

Can VE crack be repaired? (JB weld it ??)
Or should I go with the DE one?

doesnt the chain cover bolt into the top oil plan with 2 nuts?

depeing on where the crack is you can have it welded up. or just get a new one they cheap. $240 for a ve 1 from gregv

you need to find a VE one.

The amount of RTV used was not the problem in why it cracked. You just used the wrong procedure to take it off.

When taking off a Oil pump cover always take it off from the bottom moving up to the top.

yeah if you look between the ribbing on the top sump you should see a little plate there fasnted with 2 screws. loosen them take the plate off and there are 2 nuts there that hold the oil pump /chain cover aswell

Do I have to take the oil pan off for that - is it on the inside of the upper sump or the outside. Let me know as this "simple" removal became a disaster for me. Thanks for your help.

I dont remember on which oil pan but there ARE 2 bolts holding the bottom of the engine cover onto the oil pan. Just the basic 10/12mm bolt from the oil pans. you probably have to take off the lower oil pan to get access to them, but not sure, maybe just remove the windage tray out of the way.

I just did this about 2-3 weeks ago.

P.S. I have a 16VE front engine cover with pump and pick-up and tray and all that....let me know if you need it....I'll give you a good deal on it (still won't be super cheap)
