Head noise, checked shim clearances...need advice
I have this rattle in my head and i figured my valves needed to be shimmed. I started with the intake side and my clearances range from .005-.008 and the exhaust ranged from .010-.014 i found specs on here were intake .009 and exhaust .013 +/- .002. From what i can tell im not totally out of spec not enough to make this crazy loud chatter from the head. Any other ideas?

I doubt it's the shims, the lash clearance fall within factory spec. I would say a bad chain tensioner.

Sorry i didnt get to get back to you but yeah, sounds like timing chain noise more than likely. Go oem from Greg V. By far the cheapest you will find it and its oem

Does the VE head still use hydraulic lifters like the DE's? Could be a bad lifter

^ Nope...

Are you sure its top end noise? Some of the head noise is expected, their not super quiet.

My VE's are within spec and healthy but the valvetrain is certainly not quiet. Is it a noise that's gotten worse over time or did you just do a swap and it's louder than you expected?
