Sputtering after N1 install
Hey Guys,
I have installed N1's along with Supertech S&Rs at Mac Crook's shop. It seems like when VVL kicks in, it starts sputtering then at higher RPMs, it stays on. I switched from different bins on my Calum to different activation RPMs from 4500-5600 and still does the same thing: Sputters on and off until about 6500 and VVL then stays on. I hope nothing will be damaged as i am getting it tuned in about 14 hours. My question is, is this normal? And will this affect my tuning? Another thing that i observed is that at the beginning, there was a LOT of chattering at the cam area. We checked everything including switching different valve covers and it seemed to die down. Again, i might be just paranoid, but im hoping that nothing is damaged and that it won't affect my tune. Can anyone shed some light?

I wouldn't call it "normal" SR20's with new cams tend to run a little funky the first few starts/miles driven.. but it could be something with your install

Sometimes chatter up top is related to low oil or low oil pressure.

Check your oil level to make sure and possibly drain it to see how much oil you have and if any shavings are in there!

The install should be good..ill check the oil level in the sm. Could verywell be a llittle low, although we did crank it while the valve cover was off and the squirters were working..seemed a little low opposite the dustributer side. We cleaned both squirters three times total. Hopefully with a few more miles, it goes away by the time I get to the Dyno.

what are you using to trigger the vvl? I had issues with my mss dropping in and out right before it decided to die. I agree that oil pressure is usually the culprit with vvl issues. did you make sure you have the oilers in the rocker retaining rod pointing the right direction.

New or old style chain tensioner? Did you hand turn the motor after reassembly to let the tensioner fully seat? If the noise went away i would not be too concerned. The breaking up could be bad AFRs, take it easy until you get it tuned.

Im using a Gizmo controller. It worked before the install..i was also told that one possibility is that it just needs to be tuned..running too rich on switch makes it flutter..i guess we will find out today if it gets cured!

Not sure what tensioner i have, but it was hand turned after assembly. The noise did go away(thank goodness) but i think you are right on the AFRs..ill get that fixed today and posy #'s.

It all went away with the tune...it was SUPER rich at the bottom and about 14.7 up top! Now it's all good.
