Valve Cover Powdercoating issue
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but i was getting my valve cover powder coated and on the pre-heat for clean up, i was told the black sealant was melting at 250* therefor it wont survive the 400* the powdercoating will bake it on. QUestion is, Would i be able to re-seal it myself or will i be ok with out it? I have not seen the valve cover yet so i have no idea what is involved. THanks in advanced.

You can re-apply some silicone when done.

What are you talking about lol. I think he's talking about the black sealant on the underside of the valve cover that holds the baffle or whatever that thing is called in place.

You are correct. I have not been back to the powder coating guy, but he mentioned taking off the plate/removing the rivets and i was kinda dumbfounded. This just doesn't sound good to me. Would I be ok with NOT taking the valve cover apart and reseal or is this pretty important. I was told it was needed not only for moisture reasons but for pressure too. Can anyone confirm this? THanx again.

If you drill out the rivets there will not be much holding it in. I would scrape off as much of the stuff as you can, then after the powder coating re-apply some gray RTV and be on your way.

see about buying a used one and experiment with that one so that you can be certain that all will go back together with no issues. That's what i would do

Update:
So i took off as much of the old sealant as i could and re-sealed it. It seems to be ok..it wasn't as bad as i thought and did not have to remove the rivets.
