Thread: VVL coolant boiling over

Theres actually only one fan, drivers side. The car never came with A/C. Thought i remember that the sentras with A/C had two fans.

Umm I think even ones without a/c as an option came with two fans regardless. Both fans kick on when the temp hits what the ecu is looking for. Either way Id recommend two fans and yeah, might still start with the circuit and if all power checks out and you ground the relay and nothing happens then the fan is probably the culprit.

I wish SE-R.net was still around, or at least the archive. I remember reading that some of the 91-92 Sentra's without A/C as an option had only 1 fan. But it was something that was uncommon, and I believe I read it 8+ years ago. Ahh could be wrong. anyways, I'll get cracking on this thing. Thanks Ashton

Boiled coolant, been there. Coolant temp sensor died fans didn't turn on if I recall. Still showed on the gauge that my temp was fine when mine did it.

Also, I had A/C with my car. Has two fans. I ripped the entire AC system out. Only 1 fan comes on when I hit temp.

happy to hear that this could be a simple fix.... as oppose to a tear down a the motor (fingers still crossed as we dont know if it did get damaged in the process).... keep us updated plz

So, you reported an overheating car, changed oil [to inspect for coolant?], did 4 dyno runs ALL BEFORE you checked if your radiator fan [one of the most obvious component of the cooling system] is working/coming on?

For the dyno runs, you start the motor, hit the gas, then shut it off. Only til we left it running did I notice my fans weren't coming on. And yes its possible to over look something simple when you think its something major.. especially with engines, which have so many variables.

i have both fans in my car wired to run as soon as the key comes on....the relays are screwy and don't always work.....changing out abunch of my cooling system soon......my last motor had a bad headgasket when i got it and it never once mixed coolant and oil that i could tell....always pushed air into the cooling system.....no bueno

Do you find that it takes your engine a long time to warm up? If my fans came on at ignition on where I live for half the year my car wouldn't get warm enough for heat. I was paranoid after I boiled coolant and wired mine to a switch, manually turned them on after I reached temp. After I fixed the sensor I wired them back to normal and all is well. I am still paranoid because the wire harness plug for my coolant sensor is busted a bit and struggles to stay on.

if the lower rad hose is hot... im going with HG also

edit: read more.... pull the relay and use a wire to jump the terminal for the fan(s). if they come on... its either the sensor or the relay
