VE with girdle?
after poking around the de fsm i got to thinking...
why doesn't the ve have a girdle? cost savings only? ya, it has a lighter 4 c/w crank but, come on
under high tq or high rpm conditions whats to prevent the light-weight cast aluminum block from longitudinal flex? the crank, and a couple thrust washers? hell, the cylinders get distorted from just bolting down the head
i'm sure others have looked at this and scratched their heads also. who's put a girdle in their VE? de upper and/or lower pans required?

Probably has no girdle for less parasitic oil drag on the crank.

Why would they need a girdle when the factory VEs are all paired with a CVT with a low RPM?

I put a girdle & 8 CW crank in my VE block when I built it for boost. I wouldn't go without it. Peace of mind.

X2, windage consideration

Lol, what about the SR16, N1, and 20V. They're pretty high revving.

Check this thread out: http://www.sr20-forum.com/nitrous-oxide/13509-girdle-removal-nos-motor.html

Removal of the girdle will add about 7 hp on a SR20DE motor. This is a fact.

The girdle makes the oil bounce back and forth from girdle to crank. The faster you rev the more oil is doing this, the more power you lose.

Almost the same concept of knifedging a crank. As you are making the crank more aero drynamick so it can slice threw the soup of air and oil more easy. You end up with less frontal resistance.

Figure the SR16VE crank is 68.9mm and SR20 crank is 86mm to make the SR16VE crank scraper to fit as it is one pc unit all you would have to do is trim down 9.25mm or 3/8s off of the stands that hold it onto the oil pan and you would have the same clearance as it would be on a SR16VE when putting it on a SR20.

I have a girdle on my ve along with a 8cw crank. I used a set of de upper and lower pans so I did not have to grind the ve pans.

this what i'm talking about. 3 guys, building high tq/rpm ve motors, with the concept of "it can't be built too strong".
to my layman' brain the bottom end seems like a flexi-flyer w/o one.
parasitic hp losses to windage, ehh. it's strength AND longevity i'm after.

thanks guys

Girdle is good if your going for big HP. Those of us that are fine with even 300 and under don't need them. Heck even 200whp is fun on these cars, thus girdle is even less needed.
