So, my question is, based on the last few years of experience, is the community consensus still that an oil cooler is needed for engine safety on the track?

Thanks much.

98sr20ve is right, I have seen 20* less in just one lap of short shifting.
Yes an oil cooler is not only necessary it is a must for roadrace VE motors.
high ambient temps. 85+ and high humidity can yield 260* oil temps.

just food for thought. at work when im testing a turbine engine after overhaul. part of my test procedure recomended by garrett is to check vibration after the oil temperature has reached 240*F. this is said to be where the most vibration will take place due to the lower viscosity of the oil. also oil pressure is set at this time.

To back up the theory yeah my tempratures were getting quite hot after 8 hard laps on a cold day they were 120-130(248-266) degrees and after the cool down lap they were back down close to 100(212).

So im looking at oil coolers now to wipe 30 degrees off the temp tossing up between 19row or 25row??

Cheers guys

I believe Jason Schamanski (sp?) would run with a cover over his oil cooler to help get the oil up to temperatures if the ambient temps aren't high enough. I did a double session last year at the SE-R Convention in 90* temps, and my oil temps got pretty high. Since my car is basically a street car, I decided a couple cool down laps would be a better investment than dealing with an oil cooler setup.

I'll have to keep better records of my oil temps while on track.

Also don't a bit more loggin on cruise @ 60mph the oil sit between 90 and 100 degrees so Ve's basically meaning ve's should be fitting with a small oil cooler at least.

Going to bring this bad boy back from the dead. What adapter to use on the block? I have my eye on a greddy remote oil cooler adapter with Tstat. Greddy 12401114 Remote Oil Filter Relocation with Thermostat The AN fittings and the lines are cheap just need to know what adapter for the block.

The adapter you posted is not compatible with the engine's filter thread size.
Have a look on these:
Relocation
Standard
All adapters

How about the standard adapter?

The adapter requires a 3/4x16UNF (Ν14 SR20) filter and not the Μ20x1.5
The bolt thread for fastening the filter is always 3/4χ16UNF so depending the engine we use the correct thread for the block (Μ20x1.5 for VE)

Comparing the 2 filters (the big one is the N14 3/4x16UNF)

I found a more appropriate 3/4x16UNF filter for use with the adapter, same size as the M20x1.5

You could look for them on JDM shops.
