Thread: Cracking Sparkplug porcelain

As of about a month ago, i have cracked my 2nd sparkplug while driving. The first time i cracked a plug was about 3 months prior to this one. Both plugs that cracked were NGK's. I know that the plug is cracking while driving because when it does form a crack, the engine will start misfiring inconsistently. As in, sometimes it will actually fire the plug and sometimes it will arc through the porcelain into the spark plug tube. I am running a MSD 6al ignition box, Blaster SS coil, ULTRA 8mm plug wires and an oem distributor. I don't remember if the previous plug that cracked was the same cylinder. I did switch to a different brand plug for the time being and will post back if it does end up cracking again.


On a side note, i was reading a TSB that BMW came out with regarding the same issue , and their fix for the problem was to replace the ignition coil boots and spark plugs.

try using a factory coil or invest in a new coil blaster, they are about 40 bucks, its worth a shot

yeah i am going to purchase a new blaster coil and a set of plug wires too

what heat range?

My boy is ing this same issues we haven been looking for a solutions for months and haven't gotten anything yet

can you post a pic of the strap over the tip of your plug taken from car immediately after a run?

yeah it is a heat range 6 plug.

And nizmo, do you want me to do a 3rd gear pull from 5k to 85/8900rpm
? I can do the pull the get off the exit and then its about a 10 second drive off the exit to my house.

And i actually switched to a comparable champion plug. Notice no difference and no cracking so far. Been about a month now since i changed plugs.

Im also using a 6al with a Blue HVC-II coil but haven't seen anything like that on my plugs
