Thread: Cometic vs SR20VE metal gasket

I know there has been a lot of discussion about the cometic head gasket. But there are really not a lot of options for the VE, i would love to get a cosworth but as far as I know is only available for the DET.

So, the question would be, the VE metal gasket that is for sale on gspec here:

That HG being OEM is still better than the Cometic??? I found a nismo one for $550 LOL, and I really would not like to spent that much on the HG.

My goals are 15psi daily, 24psi for track time.

Your goal is easily attainable with the metal VE from gregV.
Cosworth had gaskets work for ALL SR20s, even VEs, this was stated in a Cosworth thread in the other forum. And they are good value for money.
IMHO, the GregV HG is at least as good as the Cometic.
Forget the Nismo one, too much $$$, no need for it with your goals.

Cool then, I will go with the VE metal gasket. Just a couple of questions, I got JE pistons with 86.5mm bore, is that ok with this head gasket?

About the head studs, I'm going Greddy, I guess VE uses the same studs as the DET, is that correct..?

Yea the pistons should be fine with a stock gasket. The VE has the same studs as the DET motors except the GTIR.

And good luck finding a metal hg from greg. I have been looking for one for months now. He is out of stock and doesn't know when he will have more. So the cometic may be your only option. Unless you want to wait for eternity.

I ran the stock one on 20+psi with arp head studs without any problems whatsoever. But now I may be going with cometic and hopefully that one is at least as good as stock. Greg says the cometic looks nearly identical. And he sells a lot of them. But I asked him about whether he has issues with them blowing out and he said nope!

I wonder if all the people having hg failures are caused by something other than the hg or studs? maybe it is just coincidence?

Yeah, I called and they are currently unavailable. So I will be going with the cosworth one, as it is supposed to work on the VE as well.

who sells the cosworth? how much?

Just put the VE gasket in there & call it a day.I've pushed it to 30psi without any issues.

I got the cometic. It looks like a decent piece. It is 3 layer steel and is embossed around sealing surfaces. Looks like a mls gasket really. It is about 1/3 the weight of the stock 20v gasket.
