VVL cutting in and out at high RPM?!?!
I hope you guys can help me here. Im having a problem with my VVL activation. I was at the track yesterday and when I shifted into 3rd, the VVL would cut out and then cut in again at 5800+rpm. I preset the activation time at 4800rpm using the MSD window switch. It would the same thing in 4th gear aswell, but not 1st or 2nd
I checked all the wires and see nothing wrong.

Heres the weird thing, when i drive it on the street, it doesnt do it at all. Although I dont hammer it like I do on the track.

As anyone experienced this before? Is something wrong with the MSD window switch?

Any help would be great

I had a similar problem where it would cut in and out. Although it wasn't gear related and it happened frequently. Turned out to be a bad connection on the rpm wire. Bad idea on my part to use those wire connectors that came with my msd. :\

i had the same issue but it ended up to be a faulty wire on my power wire on my vvl selinod .... i would recommend if u have a dvom test on the wire to make sure theres no high resistance or open wires then work from there ... looking with ur eye only u can always miss the important things

What was your oil pressure like? If your pressure is low (due to low oil levels perhaps), it can cause your VVL to deactivate.

i have this same problem. sometimes when going hard in first the vvl wont work. but in the other gears its fine. Also in other times during fast high rpm's it will cut off. i was thinking i wasn't getting correct oil flow to the switches.

I have no clue, lol. I dont have that gauge yet. I checked my oil level, and it wasent terribly low....it was about half.

What oil weight you guys running? The VVL needs at least 40psi to activate so if you are running a 5w30 really hard it can cause the oil pressure to drop.

Have you wired the window switches directly or are you using a relay?

It can be one of two things: wiring or oil, as mentioned before.

If you take the ignition signal from the ignition coil it can skip out. This is more common with the GReddy MSS but I've seen it happen with the MSD stuff too. The answer is to take the rpm signal at the ECU. Its one of the blue wires on the bottom left.

It could also be bad wires from the vvl solenoid(s). I doubt it is low oil pressure. Pray its not.

I am running 5W30 Mobil 1.....time for a gauge. So I should run 10W30 and see what happens.

Yes it is wired directly with no relay.
