A mis-gapped plug isn't going to cause detonation.

Ditto...running too large of a gap would simply cause the spark to blow out, causing a "miss" in the cumbustion sequence, more common in the upper rpm's. I've always run them as high as I can, it takes time to figure out how much is too much, but once you get it right, bob's your uncle.
