I'm about to start assembling the engine. Quick question: The engine will most likely sit around a few years before putting it in a car. Should I pour some oil in it and crank it now and then (with a ratchet)? What kind of assembly lube should I use for the bearings?
Yes, that option has crossed my mind. But there is a few reasons to why I want to do it now. It would really free up alot of space and parts won't go missing. I know the water pump will dry out, but the crank seals should be ok if there's oil in it, right?

to main seals not really. In order for those things to stay lubricated and not go bad they need to have movement to allow lubricant to get to them. This is part of the reason a JDM engine everyone always says to replace those seals at a minimum and those engines have probably been sitting for 6mo - 1yr.
As for space, I would do what most do. Get a storage space or find a place in your garage or buy a nice semi weather proof shed. then get a good shelving unit that can hold the heavy stuff. Label everything and make sure it's packed and labeled well. And store it. I'll tell you one thing Hi Loft is often a shade tree mechanics best friend.

yep, i agree... dont assemble until needed. you let that thing sit for that long after assembly you wont remember any little details you may need for 1st start up.
