Not having the head resurfaced stands a good chance of being your problem then, especially with a cometic MLS gasket.

Wanna explain why? Is it harder to seal the cometic with the material it is made out of?

Yeah, whenever a head is removed it should be refaced and a new HG used.

I said cometic especially, as ive seen them fail in this scenario too many times, unlike a a composite gasket they just dont have the forgiveness in them to take up any imperfections on the head or blocks surface. The same could be said of any MLS gasket.

I hope it is just the gasket and head that needs refacing for you.

SR20-Authech pretty much covered it.

It's alway a good idea to resurface the head when ever the head is removed. Since you got a used head and don't know the running history of cylinder head, it might had a bad heat cycle(overheated) and warped, so resurfacing the head is a good idea.

Another reason to resurface the head and block is because of the leftover imprint/indentation from the head gasket. By skimming the head and block, you are insuring a new completely flat surface for good sealing. I would think it is an even more critical step for the big bore people since you guys are dealing with less sealing surface area.

did you use a maz gasket to check for leakage? now its another $300+ for you next gasket AND the price of another sleeved block. what $150-$250 for a block + 1 $LARGE$ for the sleeving/machine work ?
i'm beginning to think plunking for the maz block upfront is NOT a bad idea
