what to do with my VE b14??
So here's my story......It's vehicle registration time for my b14, so I pay online and was going to do a smog this weekend. I get a letter from the dmv saying they cannot go any further with the reg. until I get a SALVAGE certificate saying that my car is legal to drive and all the bells and whistles work. I completely forgot about the accident my wife got into last year and the insurance totaled my car. So I have a few options 1) keep the car, smog the ve, get the car inspected by state officials(remember VE) and pay a shitload of fines and fees for inspections, would have to remove and replace radiator support($$$) etc.
2) take out the ve and put the old de in, sell the car cheap and find another b14 or p11(my wife has been wanting) or 3)keep the car and register as non-op, gut it completely and keep it for track/race only. I don't really know what to do and was hoping I can get some input from my fellow sr20 headz!!

Go for option 3! Strip it down to bare bones..... nearing full interior miata weight or less.... and run the piss out of it in the autocross. I don't have to deal with emissions here but that is what I am working towards with my dd.

4: get the break and light inspection done and get it smoged.

VEs will pass emissions. Even if there's a visual they don't usually see it.

We think too much alike, lol But in this situation since it isn't just an emissions issue it sounds like a headache either way. I would start with the inspection for the salvage title since you won't be able to get what the car is worth with or without it. Most people won't buy a salvage titled vehicle so you may be stuck with it. You can get around the smog thing one way or another and as long as it was fixed correctly you shouldn't have an issue with passing inspection. These cars nowadays get totaled for a fender, radiator support & bumper cover since they aren't worth shit as far as kbb or nada goes.

They didn't even pop my hood here in Portland. 10 minutes and $20 and I was moving on.

The state officials won't notice the VE when doing an inspection for a salvage title... they are worried about the safety aspect of the car. Smog is where you have to worry about the engine and there are ways around that, JRod mentioned one of them, lol. Taking the neo vvl badge off the valve cover helps since most people will just see a 2 liter nissan engine anyway, even with the badge on. I do emissions at the shop I work at and not one of my techs or myself even do more than pop the hood (sometimes) and make it look like we are looking for cats under the car (sometimes). That is just because they have cameras watching and if they happen to look at the shop that day they want to see that. Most people don't even go as far as popping the hood or looking under the car since the shop gets 7 bucks out of the 20 they charge for emissions so I want the cars in and out as fast as possible without dropping a car off the dyno. I can promise you that if it is anything like up here in CT where testing is done at local shops, no one gives a shit if you have an egr or any emissions equipment at all as long as the car passes, whether it be an actual sniffer test 95 or earlier or obd2 test 96 & up. Most emissions testers in CT make 9 bucks an hour so they really don't care. Let me know more about your emissions and you salvage inspection in your state and I can help you out more.
