its not just getting the cars to pass the actual test. it is possible to get it to pass with out anything but in california it is different. also the way maryland measures its HC, co and noxs looks different. they measure parts per million in california. i dont have a sheet infront of me but i belive the hc max is around 65 for 15mp 45 for 25mph. which alone is a hard number to beat with a properly running DE. california cars were never designed to pass the emission test values they have to now. but that is the state trying to push "high polutant" cars off the road.

I just passed a second legit smog on my B14 VE yesterday. The CO and NO were almost non-existent. The HC's barely passed because the Nistune was tuned for power. But I'm sure if you throw a little more timing into the area of load that is used during the test it will pass with no problems. I can post up a copy of report if you guys would like. The funny thing is this time around the guy was looking for an EGR but didn't say anything and since I don't have the stock hood he just passed me. This is the same guy that did the test last time....but last time he looked up in his book and thankfully the shop owner was there and let me slide. This time it was just the tech that was there.

btw, they keep lowering the max levels, especially on the HC's....it's down to 64 @15mph and 47 @ 25. I hit 64/47 so I barely passed...then again my ecu is tuned for power not efficiency.

ya but when you change stuff to lower the hcs you bring up the other ones. but remeber this is still an illegal smog im trying to eliminate that on VEs

Yes, I understand the VE is not a lega swap but it runs cleaner than a DE out the tailpipe when it's properly tuned. Since the CO and NO were so low on mine I can definitely pass even if I bump up the timing a bit. The EGR system works to lower the NO, in my case I don't need it. lol. It helps to have a functioning OEM cat. My cat has 120K+ miles on it. I keep it fresh in between tests.

egr actully works to lower hc. think of hc as unburnt fuel and nox as heat. the richer(higher hc) the cooler the motor is running. VEs are very efficient and do run cleaner then DEs. and a good cat is always a must on any nissan haha i have special cats too have to dust them off twice a year.

Doesn't EGR work to lower combustion chamber temperature which lowers NOX? I see what your saying....but the higher the temps are in the cumbustion chamber the higher the NOX are going to be...but this is what I've been taught in the auto classes I took and the instructor was a master technician and supervisor for Toyota and Lexus and has over 20 years of experience. Maybe he didn't explain it right or has different theories? lol. I know that if you inject oxygen into the exhaust gas that will cause the remaining HC's to burn as well.

the point of egr is to put the unburnt fuel(hc) back into the combustion chamber to give it a second burn but yes it also does reduce nox but its a by product. when nox are high and hc is low its never the egr. if the hcs are a little high and nox are low the cat is working corectly. egr would lower the hcs and bring the nox up slightly. but an efficent motor can run cleaner then any emission component can change. look at all the new cars they only have cats. because the can finally tune the computer for efficency. the 80s and 90s used emissions parts to cover up the lack of tuning they could do. now the dont even need cats but the state wants 0 emissions so they have to have them.

^^^makes perfect sense. I do remember that being stated, but I guess I wasn't paying much attention in class. haha.

hahaha the state is going to come down hard on 95 and older cars soon and id rather have options then having to sell my car to the state

same here. I'll be happy if my P10 VE does just as well on smog next spring...it's a 95. Do you have any smog shops in your area that you work with? I might want to have it pre-tested with a full results printout. I want to know where I stand on it before going through with the actual test including the max limits.

on a side note, I also had side-gapped and indexed the spark plugs on the B14 before I smogged it. Looks like it might of helped.
