Dropping filter when changing oil
I just want to see if I am the only one that keeps dropping my oil filter in the oil pan 9 times out of 10 oil changes. Everytime I drop the filter it drops right in the pan and splashes oil everywhere on my driveway. Is there an easier way? I think I might have to start taking the oil filter off before I drain the oil from now on.

Engine is sr20ve 16 valve.

uhhh never done that before.. sometimes i do it from under the car, but lately i've found it easier to just stick my hand back there from the passenger side, i let it hang upside down an drain in the pan for a few seconds then i turn it right side up an pull it out.. never dropped one.

i hate that they changed the drain location on the ve pans tho, makes getting the plug off without bein douched with oil a pain in the ass

Maybe it's just me then, I pull mine off from the top passenger side too, I dont have a problem with the drain location on the ve I might get a drip or 2 on my hands but I wear gloves anyway while I'm working on the car, I can actually change the oil on my ve equipped car without jacking it up, I can't say the same for my 200sx with the de engine,
when you have to change your oil every 3 weeks to a month like I do, dropping the filter gets old quick

I like the location. Can't remember how often I dropped it but I'm sure I have before after dozens of ve oil changes. Get a covered drum to drain it into. With five cars I'd think you would rather bring the oil in to recycle less often. Then you never have to worry about dropping it to boot. Sounds like you have a case of the yips but with an oil filter.

All you need is a rag to wipe the axle with. I don't think it hurts that joint to get some oil but sometimes I worry if the oil breaks down the anti-seize I put in there to make pulling axles easier.

Changing oil??? What tool are you using to remove the oil filter?

Go get this one and never worry about dropping it again, attatches to a ratchet and is spring loaded and holds the filter.

My first oil change to the VVL was a PITA, the oil filter was overtightened and was so damn hard to get it out, struggled during an hour using misc tools until I ended up crossing the filter with a screwdriver, kind of a mess I did at the garage lol
