^ I always thought Mobil 1 was on of the best "off the shelf" oils out there. What are you guys using? Royal Purple?

the lower viscosity oils did not rank well during testing. However ive always used mobil1 15w50 and never had an issue with bearings. And I was running my motor to almost 9000 rpm at one point and 11k miles at 8000 rpm, roughly 550whp, 450whp daily and my bearings were in perfect condition when i pulled them to check while the motor was out of the car.

This is turbo applications though. I wouldnt use that thick of an oil on an n/a motor. 10w40 at the thickest for n/a applications.

i run some stuff called kendall, i use 10w30 an its a sythetic blend.. it has liquid titanium and it seems like its pretty good stuff i've put easily 10k on my engine using that oil an its soo freakin clean under the valve cover and i havent had any issues at all.. whats cool is i can get 12 quarts for 25$ so thats 3 oil changes

if i had the money i'd run valveoline synthetic tho

^You guys remember this thread?

P.S. What about Mobil 1 oil filters?

Again it was the thinner viscosity mobil 1 oils that failed. The thicker oils did fine. Again it wasnt the 15w50 that caused you to spin the bearing. I use the Mobil 1 filters as well and again never any issues. They are good filters. I believe since that testing was done Mobil 1 has gone back and made some changes to production and quality has gone up. Only bad part is soo has the price of it. Instead of being 6 bucks a quart its now almost 9 bucks a quart. So that part sucks. I have been using the new mobil 1 5w30 in my wifes acura mdx with mobil 1 filters as well, usually put between 3-5k miles on it between changes and never any metallic flakes in the oil or filter when I do the changes. We have put over 50k miles on it since owning it and no problems.

So again thats old testing. Id like to see a more recent test done and see what happens. Ive always been a mobil 1 user and i think ill stick with it. Except the gear oil. Too thin for my trannies. lol. For n/a i would use their gear oil as well. Its still good stuff just too thin for my application.

Say what? I'm getting screwed where I'm at then. 4.4 liters, which is equal to 1.16 US gallons, of Mobil 1 is $48. One liter (appx. 1/4 gallon) of Royal Purple is $13.99, same for Lucas and Amsoil is a buck more expensive.

I think I'm moving!

old school muscle car guys used to run kendall back in the Detroit muscle car craze. except it was a tad different i think, for one it used to be Green an they refferd to it as the green stuff or something like that, well its not green anymore an im sure they have changed the formula to meet todays standards.. also a friend of mine knows a guy who uses this stuff in his dragster an says its the only thing he's found that doesnt boil at the end of the 1/4.

also kendall is the only oil i've found that states that it has liquid titanium right on the lable, i've checked others front an back an havent seen that they have it.. also its cheaper then most conventional oils and its a synthetic blend.. wellll they do make full synthetic an it is a tad more spendy but still not as much as some other brands..

well only reason i am running mobile 1 15w50 is that is what the prev owner ran the whole time so i didnt want to change it up. but again i am sure what oil i used is not why im having the problem. Im having problems cause it got a couple quarts low on me somehow and i ran it up to almost 8 grand the other day. which is a little high. but when i get off work today i am going to try the plug test thingy and if it narrows down to one cylinder then i will def know its a bearing. so i rekon my next step after the test is to rip the bottom end out and and replace the bearing?

the bad thing about buying an engine from someone is that you really never know what the hell they did to it.. i guess the same goes from ordering them online, Except that the chances they were beatin is alot less likely because most the cars we get our engines from arent exactly "performance cars" and alot were mated to auto trannys..

i Always use my engine to its fullest thats for sure, but i've never revved it passed 9k an never really miss shifted (put into a lower gear then i meant) although i have accidently not got it all the way into gear an it would rev but even then i highly doubt it was past 9k also i have no rev limiter so its never had to bounce off that harsh ass limiter which kills engines big time imo... the thing is every one has their mishaps, shit happens.. so when buying a motor your buying the p.o's mishaps, now im positive my engines fine but who knows what the guy did to that engine before you got it, so it most likely has nothing to do with the oil used..

anyway its best to just see whats going on, hold the engine at 3k~ an pull one spark plug at a time and make sure you pull it all the way out so that the spark doesnt arch back to the plug, if the sound goes away on one of the cylinders you found your culprit..

btw, knock knock..

whos there?

rod

rod who?

Rod #3 B!tch! hehehehe

Oh, and ya running 2qts low an revving to 8k prolly didnt help either
