Thread: Shim fell down a oil hole!

During the process of installing a new head gasket. Head bollts installed, rockers and shims where on the head and while putting the Rod thru the rockers a damn shim fell thru a oil hole all the way down the pans.....not fun. So has anybody been in the same situation?
Im thinking before taking the lower pans down, getting a magnetic pick up with the flexible cord as i already tried with the anntena looking magnetic retriever with no luck.

Anybody fished a damn shim before?? Any luck???

Yea pull the pans without a doubt, that shim could have gone anywhere. It's probably sitting on the oil baffle plates.

Yeah i would try a flexible magnet first and see if you can get lucky if not then pull the lower pan and its probably in there or on top of the baffle.

I went got a flexible mag pick up, im going to try the turbo oil drain first then the lower oil pan.

I try the mag pick up but wont go any deeper then 2-3inch, just pull the oil pan and the lower part of the black off. I drop mine too and it fell right down. The drain hole drop straight down, will if it a VE then it would.

coincidentally, i was putting in my bc valve springs yesterday and one of the retainer/valve clip (little semi circle thing) fell in one of the oil holes!

i just got a new clip and left in in there. couldnt be bothered to pull of the oil pan and didnt have any magnet that could reach down there.

You should plan on getting a magnetic drain plug for your crankcase, or at least take the cover off to see if it's down there..

agreed, oil sloshes around a lot in an oil pan, it's possible that it could wind up in your lower bearings and rods somewhere...
