SE-R or SR16ve Tranny for Drags - all motor sr20ve?
which is a better tranny for drag?

i know there are a lot of variables - tyre sise, power band, rev limit etc

but...

my friend wants to rev to about 8500-9000 on some 205/50/16 street tyres.

he has SER lsd tranny but contemplating going sr16 tranny

the sr16 tranny is nice for the country roads (i have sr16ve tranny) but i find that i lose a bit on the 1320 having to shift from 3rd to 4th just before going the the finish line. I rev to 8500 with 205/50/15 and finishes the 1320 about 6300rpm in 4th. that affects my ET and trap speed as well

best i have gotten is 13.9 @ 100mph on street tyres

let me all know what you think

peace

I'd say 16VE.. Shorter Gears! But more Gas on the hwy..

If he's around 200 whp like most stick with the de gearbox because of the gear spacing from 3rd to 4th in the 16ve tranny like you said so unless he make atleast 215-220hp the de is better for drag.

The 4th gear is the same in both. But since the DE box has a longer 3rd it makes for better spacing. I say DE box with shorter fd. I wish we had 5.0 available for the de box.

what will the shorter fd do in a de box... what gear will one finish the quarter in?

Its going to be diff for everyone. Depends on traps and the fd used. Bit the sr16 and DE Trans share the same 4th gear

this is a comparison of where each gear will get you with sr18/20 gears - at least 1st to 4th. stock fd (4.17) vs 5.0 fd

what i am assuming with say 200whp, and a 2500lbs car (with driver), you should finish at about 100-102mph that would be in 3rd gear

with the 5.0 fd you should finish somewhere in 4th but i am not certain what rpm. should be fairly high up though to make use of the power band

so it depends on the power band

also with a higher fd, as can be seen by the graphs, you reach up in your powerband/speed much faster

this is a comparison between the sr20 gearbox and the sr16 gearbox using my friend's tyre size and the rev limit to which he intends to rev.

i guess his power will determine what trap speed he will attain in order to know where what rpm/gear bhe will end the 1320 in.

however, based on the above, if his car holds power fairly well up to 9000rpm, i would go with the sr16ve tranny. i suspect he will make 190-200whp. car is a b13

Has anyone tried the stock SE-R gearbox with the 4.78FD that Mfactory sells vs stock SE-R gearbox vs SR16 gearbox?

Nice info nizmo!
