Honing...
Alright well I am thinking of sliding in a set of new pistons and rings. I can have it all done in a few hours with the motor in the car. I want to see if any of you guys have done rings without honing. Obviously I will do the religious break in period.

I have another block I would use but it was honed before and has scoring to the cylinder wall. I just kept it for a block to have sleeved later down the road. I spoke to a couple buddies of mine who have put motors together and some have done this without honing. Just wanna get some input from you guys.

I have about 5K miles on this motor. IIRC, the walls looked good and she runs strong right now for being a stock motor.

remember when you hone you take material off and if you do not clean it properly you will cause more problems. id wipe them clean re install with proper lube. If there are scores Id take it out, hone and to a proper wash.

Thats what me and Rick were talking about. I figured I should be good so long the walls look to be in good shape. I know before the head went on, the surface was very clean. It would just be a fun little street setup I can slap together. I just like some reassurance. Thanks John.

USE A STONE HONE THAT HAS SOLID RECTANGULAR BLOCKS, NOT A BALL HONE!!! Also use 400 grit stones.

^^^^^^ what hen said. It's what I usually do. The I brake clean everything till it's clean. I put rags on the cranks journals with tape to Prevent shavings to into the oil holes. Be careful with the oil squirters when you hone. Gl

Bes pm me with what u got going on. As usual im curious.

Im not a fan of just slapping in pistons by any let alone leaving the block in the motor by any means.

If ur dead set on leaving the block in the car id take suoercowboys advice.

Its just a big time saver on my part. Getting the motor to TDC and ripping off the head shouldn't take long at all. I figure i'll clean up the head and block for a clean surface (was mint before I put it together and I used a VET headgasket so shouldn't be messy like the factory crap). Then its just a matter of putting the pistons on my rods with new rings. Slide them down with some fresh rod bearings. Seal up the pans and pop on the head. Easier said than done but its a bullshit motor to play with for now. I won't be cutting corners when it comes to big bore time.

I mean, I could get a honer from Harbor Freight or somewhere and use that. I just don't want to risk getting any shavings in an oil valley, etc.

I say you just bring the car down to the shop on a friday night again, we take the motor and throw it on a stand and do everything the right way. East woods machine shop is 10 minutes away for a quick hone and hot tank. We already slapped together your current ve and it runs like a champ. Honestly it was extremely easy since we had the right tools and torque specs. I say hone, rings, bearings and headstuds. once big bore comes around Ill buy this motor off you for my black b13!

whats wrong with a ball hone? i use it all the time gives me a perfect cross. i was taught that you are suppose to use a stone hone and then a ball hone.
