Thread: SR20VE rattle noise

Within the last two days, a rattling noise developed in the engine. The rattling noise is similar to when the timing chain is stretched. Opened up the engine and found that some of the lobes on the cams had worn and perhaps this was the source of the noise, since everything else is fine.

Application is SR20ve (vvl) FWD.

Question:

1. What would cause the cams to develop wear and tear ?
2. Would a failing oil pump cause this to happen ?
3. Would a blockage in one of the oil veins in the engine lead to this ?
4. If i drop off the sump - would there be filings from wear and tear in the sump ?

Ive been searching for stock cams to replace - but very difficult to find on my part of the world.

#1 - Lack of oil
#2 - I would think so
#3 - yes, but I would be more concerned with the oil pickup tube in your oil pan. DO NOT run the motor until you find the problem. The pickup tube could be loose or broken, or your oil pan could be dented against the pickup causing blockage.

What oil are you using? what are the temperatures outside?

I am no VE expert, but you clearly are not getting proper oil pressure to the head.

The oil im using is the Mobil Clean 20/50
Temperature on the car's engine is very good - optimum temperature - Nismo thermostat installed etc - no problem with cooling.

Planned Action Today:

1. Check internal oil strainer
2. Drop of sump and look for evidence of filings
3. Drop out one of the mains and have a look at bearing

Engine is approx 3 years old...feedback

I mean the temperature outside? like 20 degrees celsius? Where are you located? what is the climate like?

mobile 20w50 is much higher weight than recommended, especially if the climate is cold. I am speaking based on sr20de knowledge since I am not as familiar with the VE, but I think the same still applies.

I am in the caribbean - temperature is all tropical and not a factor with these engines

3. Drop out one of the mains and have a look at bearing - bearings and rods good...

Are the cam oil squirters working on the cam lobes that are worn?

I would pop off the valve cover and crank over the motor and see if oil is being delivered over the cams. Just make sure disconnect the distributor so it doesn't spray fuel. Could disconnect the fuel pump fuse if you feel need be. I would do that just to get an idea and see if possibly one of the tubes are clogged.

Appreciate the advice men - will try these tomorrow and will also post up a youtuber on the noise so everyone could get an idea of whats happening.

Come on guys...this one has me a little bonkers...This is the video of the noise...

1. Listen as i yank the tb to simulate tipping the gas pedal. Notice the rattle noise ? -
2. Listen as i gradually rev the engine - no noise.

Its only when you tip the "pedal" that the noise comes. On driving - when you accelerate its there as well..
