This has got to be a downer but remember this is just like any other engine (or other) failure. Don't kick yourself too hard and hang in there.

I applaud you for running it in on the dyno imo that is the way to do it but;Did you do any part throttle tuning or just run it in?
Street tune would have been good or a few pulls at 1/4-1/2 throttle to get a baseline.

Agree. My last two engine build attempts failed cause I drove 60 miles untuned to the dyno.

Bought an Innovate wideband, street tuned the new build and I've gone about 1000 miles so far and I'm smiling. Running a bit lean for any period of time is obviously very hurtful on the motor.

Dunno what to tell you doc. Its the old every failure is an opportunity chestnut.... dimestore philosophy but its very common for Japanese motor builders. More Zen than whatever Deepak Chokra is. I know Rich already sees it like that but I hope it helps to have his own views backed up. Preaching to the choir sometimes makes them sing better.

Order one new piston and a ring set, send head off to repaired and CCed somewhere and even them all out a little if need be. Total cost maybe $500. Pistons are $110 a piece, rings $120, labor for machine shop. Not a huge hit at all in the grand scheme of things...Could end up like this guy... CRACKED ... EVERYTHING.

Better than ever too. We got your back bro. Just take your time, no rush. Just a thought, you might think about installing a wideband. I know some will disagree especially being NA but I think after what you have been through it would provide peace of mind knowing your A/F ratios are optimal throughout the powerband, especially when tuning your big block VE. so whats going on with this now?

motors been torn apart.

heads at the machine shop its getting machined out to 90mm. reason being that the spark plug tip that popped off caused some damage to the inside deck of the head. also the outer most ends the corners per say of the crown of the piston are kissing the inside of the combustion chamber.

either way none of this was a major issue at the time, im glad we have found this now and will fix the problem. but as far as the tune, weither it went lean or dentinated it was the tuners fault at the end of the day. but he did say right of the bat something was wrong.

in either case its all custom parts and unfortunatly unforseen stuff happens.

new piston and new headgasket have been ordered head will be done in about 2 weeks once the machinest is back from vacation. so im hoping to have it all back together come the end of august first week of sept the latest.

i havent given up just yet.
