I made the same mistake on mine, well purposely and there was a small lip from the cover sitting higher than the block. Luckily they didnt take much off the block and it didnt cause any issues with the awesome cosworth gasket. But when i do the rebuild im having it resurfaced with the cover on to make it perfectly flat. Im gonna need all the help i can get to keep the cylinders sealed. Dont need some stupid thing like the front cover being higher than the block to mess things up.
Cant wait to see the motor assembled Strat

the oil pump/front cover. Its best to have the motor resurfaced with the front cover bolted to the motor to take material off the cover. If you dont you will have a small lip where the front cover meets the block. Depending on how much is taken off the block it could be a significant step and can cause sealing problems with the headgasket. On my block they only took .003 off the top so the lip was there but not enough to cause issues. When i get it done again im having the cover on there to have material taken off it so its perfectly flat with the block. Makes for much better sealing.
