My VE when it was running top notch would destroy my old DE which also ran very healthy.

Apples and oranges IMHO.
when i read VE vs DE i said the exact same thing before opening the thread. ive raced quite a few DE's around here... random people and smoked them like they were cruising. i dont see a DE with bolt on's beating a ve with bolt on's ever. out the box its 30-50 hp more then a DE, revs alot faster then a DE and we all know they sound way better then a DE. dont know how u can compare these engines other the them being SR engines.
ill stick with my VE all day. once u drive a car with a VE u wont want anything else. unless its turbo

well i have a spare RR motor and a spare Lowport motor and a B15 LSD transmission.
my plan is to use the 4CW crank bottom end of the RR motor and bore it out to 92mm and then have the lowport head ported and polished and get some bigger cams than what I have in my 1998cc motor (S3's). Also I am securing an ASP budget header.. I've been told at 2.3 liters it should put down 225 hp once properly tuned.
My plan to go this route is because I want the lopey idle and something different. I like the linear power derived from a completely "natural" n/a motor. VVL is friggin great to have more low end power around town and stuff... but I think i'll have enough low end torque (more than what I currently have) even with all that high end power i'll get from 92mm bore, huge cams and header, etc...
it's all in what you want.. There's another guy in Tulsa that you know, red91sr - dave - he wants to sell his turbo kit and go N/A...
but
he hasn't driven my car yet, it may change his mind, but I probably only have 125/130 to the wheels right now. S3 cams, JWT S3 ECU, full UR pulleys, 2.5" exhaust, SSAC 2.5" header, no tune, no CAI... maybe when I get it tuned he can get a better taste of what a decent N/A car can do..
just do what you want to do. VVL will give you better "every day" driveability with a smooth idle..
according to some, the DE with a cam of the same lift and duration of an N1 cam will give you just as much power, according to others, it won't give you quite as much..
but you get lopey idle (if you want that) and something different.
it's completely your call man.. If I ever get a G20, I'd probably go VVL with it.. because it's more of a luxury car.

What cams on your 167 hp DE? Which header?
same questions for your VVL motor..
