If your going to be using some big cams the right header can help you a ton... I wouldn't doubt seeing over 10whp gain. but yeah your right its spendy.

I would tell you to but a 16ve. Take it apart, check the bore make sure.its straight and still in 86 spec. Give it a hone. Notch the pistons for the squiters, boil the pistons and add some new piston rings and attach them to stock de rods .get a sr20ve crank new crank bearings and new bolts, head and main. balance the rotating assembly do a minor port and polish on the head add a thick headgasket to drop the overall compression to 13:1.

now get a 2.5 ssac header, run the 16ve cams.

you can prolly do this for 2000 or so.

u should make about 200whp no prob. down the road sell the 16ve cams and ssac header add in springs and retainers kelford v2s a real header and possibly a intake mani. and go through down 220whp.

Tj please look at my post, i honestly feel this is your best bang for ur buck.

Other wise just roll on a n1'd sr20ve, wich is still bad ass.

Maybe jaime can chime in since i know he did a budget 86x86 build that made good power.

All also add that with the budget you have I think you could skip the pistons... yes the cr will help you out but going from 10.3 to 12.5 is really not that much of a gain. Something like 3 percent. I only picked up 5whp on my 220whp 2.0.. unless you are getting them really cheap or something I think you could save.
