The main issue is the surface needs to be flat, like precision ground flat, not angle grinder flat. We're just concerned for the well-being of the motor.

like i said these will get the engine built and in whilst i wait for shims to arrive.. there not precision ground flat but there flat.. it took me most of yesturday i took them down in 0.1mm increments meassuring them constantly with a micrometer.. i didnt gust grab an angle grinder and start slashing stuff..

i needed to do them anyway to get measurments for new ones its easy if you need thicker shims you can meassure your gap and add to the shim but when you have no gap to start with how are you supossed to work out how much to take of the shim without grinding afew?

I wouldn't have used an angle grinder but you can use some 600 grit wet and dry (wet) sandpaper on a sheet of glass to get down a few sizes. I just measured at multiple points around the edge to make sure it was flat. The case hardening should be around 0.5mm thick so you don't want to go overboard. Also there are v-rod shims here for cheaper than nissan: Procycle - Hotcams Valve Shim Kits & Refills

I wouldn't count on that. For production parts like this they try to do as little as needed. I don't know what spec they use, but I would expect 0.2mm.

Fair call, looks like 0.2 is a typical treatment. When I did mine I was only talking a couple of thousandths and made sure the adjusted side was on the valve side and I'll check them some time to see if there's any wear, but those hotcams dirt bike ones are cheap enough for a set. Could be worth it for someone wanting to experiment with different clearances.

thanks for that.. i had to take a whole mm off so i would have ground through any hardening.. like i have said i atleast know now what sizes i do need..

i have found a shim kit on local ebay following your link now so i can get a set of them and it will sll be done properly now..

going into your harley dealership and buying v-rod shims are a lot easier than trying to grind stock ones especially if you've had headwork done
