Your timing is correct, you probably had slack on the exhaust cam gear down ot the crank gear sprocket and now your timing is being shown as slightly advanced. Re-do it and make sure the exhaust cam chain is super tight and retry it again.

Your pics show everything mine did after I put cams in correctly and popped the valve cover. I took the exhaust cam off and put it back on and put it back together and it worked fine.

Your dowel pins look great. The dots match up to the number of links and rollers between them. Looks great. Exactly what my car did. It has to be related. I fixed it, you can too.

The keyhole were the exhaust cam meets the gear should be at 10 intake and 12 exhaust.

The dots are just how they are in his pictures. His shit is right. He has the exact same thing going on I did.

ok, finally got the chance to move the cam gears 1 tooth each forward clockwise, been bust sorting out the other car, ...anyway back to this, moved both the exhaust and intake gears forward 1 tooth each, did the exhaust first...

the manually turned the crank a couple of times, and when lining crank to TDC, the one on the exhaust now looks to be a bit past 12 instead of 12...where am I going wrong?

It is fine, you are good. You have 11 links and 20 rollers between each dot on the gears. You are ok.

The most important thing is making sure you had the exhaust side chain down to the crank gear as tight as possible. The intake side can be slacked because that is the tensioner side.

But he had 11 links and 20 rollers between each dot before too and there seemed to be a problem. He has moved both cam sprockets one link each and now wants to know if things are how they should be. I don't think we can tell just by counting the links between dots.

All I did was take off and reinstall the exhaust cam gear.

The gears look the same even as before.

The US Field Service Manual has it in there also, the mating marks on the cam gear, the rollers between links, the orientation and everything.

Guys forget the service manual and this and that.

Its dead simple.

Pull tensioner out, pull cam gears off. Move crank to TDC at 1.

Refer to my picture that i posted. Bolt cam gears up, make sure exhaust cam gear has no slack between it and the crank (this is essential!!!!).

Put on intake cam gear! Make sure there is no slack between intake and exhaust cam gear..

Pop in the tensioner - and turn intake cam in anti clockwise direction for a couple of degrees until the tensioner extends.

Rotate engine 4 cycles, and check from image above.
