Thread: is this correct timing setup?

installed N1 cams in my SR20VE setup a couple of weeks ago...as my old dizzy was damaged, thought it was best to change this at the same time,

so after cam install, fitting replacement dizzy and setting up timing, the dizzy is in this position below for 15deg setting.



which I thought as a bit too much forward for the timing to be at 15deg.

spoke to a friend of mine about it, and he mentioned I could have installed the cams with 1 tooth out or something...

so today got the valve cover off, and turned the crank to TDC, as below, and everything seems fine there?















any ideas on what could be setup wrong, or am I worrying about nothing?

the dizzy is a DE one from what I remember if that makes a difference.

Your cam sprocket timing marks look correct. How does the car run?
Also, those chain marks don't line up the way you have them in the picture but once in like 100 rotations. Those must be pictures of during the assembly? Or are those really pictures from after the car ran some?
If they are pics of before, it's possible the chain skipped a tooth during the initial start-up and you would need to check them again now.

just took those pics about an hour ago....have driven around 200 miles since installing cams...car seems to drive fine no obvious thing wrong, exhaust is a bit louder than before, still need to get it remapped after cam install so not expecting the car to run 100% yet anyway...

I cant quite see the pins on the cams but just because the links lined up doesnt mean the crank is. And by the looks of the pics it looks like both of your cams need to be moved foward/rotated clockwise 1 tooth on the sprocket. It doesnt look like your exhaust cam gear dowel pin is at 12 oclock and doesnt look like your intake is at 10 oclock. It looks about 1130 on the exhaust and 930 on the intake. This would be one tooth. Loosen them up and move them foward one tooth each and it looks like it would be good to go.

Those are ridiculous odds right there. Time to buy a lottery ticket I say! =]

All right then, the search for the real culprit continues. I've not familiar enough with the VE engine and DE distributor combination, or the N1 cams. So I have no idea if maybe that's how it always looks. Hopefully other people will chime in with more help.


Edit: Ashton could be on to something with his post for sure. It would be a little odd for your car to run fine though with cam timing off by 20 degrees (off one tooth on the crank sprocket). Cliff said his DET ran like total crap when that happened to him.

Im saying straight on with the level of the head where the valve cover gasket sits. That would be the best picture. If you look straight on at the cams down at the level of the head and the exhaust dowell pin is not right at 12 oclock or pointing straight up then its more than likely off. Even by that picture it looks like its off a tooth but the angle is hard to tell. And if you have your distributor advanced that far and are only getting 15 deg timing its more than likely off.

straight on as you can and level as you can. Move the harness protector and harness up or down to get the best pic.

got some pics, unfortunately not to easy to get a better pic of the intake cam straight on cause of the PAS fluid tank in the way...will see if I can find a slimmer camera or my Cell phone can take better pictures..
