Ignition set up + ECU Management
Ignition set up + ECU Management
i know a lot of people have MSD Digital 6plus & Blaster coils with the De distributor on their VE but i am using my VE distributor which have a internal coil just wanted know what others that are using the VE distributor use in to improve ignition set up or should i be looking at COP ignition i will be using a Mega Squirt 2 EMS system so just wanted everything to work together

it going to be a NA Motor
High compression
20v/N1's cams
Mixed or Full race gass

Thanks

You got several options.

You can use a Digital 6 and blaster coil with your current distrubtor. I know because I did. You just have to modify it. Getting the blaster coil to work was the hardest part because I had issues with it arcing back to stock internal coil (which I didn't bother removing).

JWT has instructions on how to get a MSD box to work with the distributor (iirc it just takes cutting one connection and soldering a wire that goes out to the MSD box). For getting the coil to work you have to cut the "tower" off the distributor (the issue I had was insulating that path so that it doesn't arc around and down the tower path, I got it to work by drilling it out slightly in the cap and stuffing with teflon tape) and modify the cap to allow a HV wire from the coil to get power to the rotor. I hid the MSD box and cap so nobody ever even realized what I had done.

Thanks for the reply wnwright
one more question are they any advantages by using Coil on Plug Ignition COP are over the Digital 6 + Coil set-up
Thanks

COP done right is better, but not necessary for your setup IMO (I don't think you will see any gains/advantages).

I think you will find the Digital 6 with stock internal coil to be enough for your setup. It is also very simple to implement. You should have more than enough spark energy this way.

@wnwright do you have the wiring drawing of your install?...

Nope, I haven't had the car in a year so it isn't like I can go look at it either.

Like I said tho, JWT has a good how-to for installing an MSD box with internal coil (ve/newer de distributor). IIRC the way I did it was like that (I did all my research from FSM) with the exception of the coil (just take output from MSD box to coil rather than distributor/internal coil and then modify cap as previously mentioned).

Find the JWT how-to and read through it (I think IIRC there may be 2-3 variations of it on their site, read them all). I can answer questions from there.

Is this really needed / will improve on N/A VEs? Or are you talking something above 12.5:1 CR?
