ve build plan part 3 lol throw in your 2cents..
as some of you know ive switched my mind on n/a motors and turbo motors liek its my job.

ive finally completed my turbo nx for the most part. just for a quick history i had a ve head and a bunch of n/a parts for my old aztec red nx2k. that plan got foiled and decided to go turbo when i got a electric blue nx.

ive just recently aquired a great electric blue nx2k thats pretty much set up for the track/autocross. it has full bolt ons motor wise but id like a bit more umff.

im not cheap but want to keep it with in a feasiable budget as it will be my daily driver. i was planning on a 6 grand motor build but thats just a waste when its just going to be driving to work everyday and occasionaly tracked here and there. my pride and joy is my turbo nx.

so heres the plan.

16ve pistons
what headgasket to bring the compression to like 12:1 or 12:5:1
head work
n1 cams s&r
ssac 2.5 header till i man up and get a better header
home made intake with a pop charger
3 inch exhaust of coarse

what else should i be looking at ? i just a pretty high n/a whp n/a driver i can beat until the weekends where i can drive my turbo car .

thanks for the time fellas.

On the turbo...

1; Go for N1 pistons, LESS compression (gudgeon pin sits higher and the dome isn't as severe), as well as having oil galleries UNDER the piston crown (puts those sqirters to good use), eh?

2; WHY N1 cams on a turbo? I would have thought that they'd have had TOO much overlap to hold the boost in the cylinder? 1600VE cams maybe?

3; N1 retainers YES YES YES! Springs? Maybe not soooooo needed for lower revs (8,500RPMs-ish).

N/A...
YEAH!

But I'm biased!

And it is just my 3.4c (I'm in NZ and your currency is higher than ours) LOL!

thats no fun, i think higher compression will really spice things up a bit.

amdeman it will be n/a.

You'll LOVE the VVL as a highly strung NA!
I'd still opt for the N1 pistons, and retainers.
IMHO there IS a limit to the ocatane ratings of fuel, and the limited tuneability of TOO much CR; as much as there IS an improvement with more CR, I'm sure that there is a point where too much really IS too much.
There are other areas that induce a better return; like HEAD WORK! Yes, THAT topic...

THE, and I stress, THE most important component of any build is the TUNING!
The differences that I've had, even when standard, between an average tune and one that works properly...
For instance, a BAD tune will make the car 'noisey', from idle through to high-revs. The sound from the exhaust changes from (I hate trying to describe sounds, but here we go) 'raspy' or 'wheezy' when off, to 'fat', 'plumpy', when healthy.
I'm only going by my own experiences, but I can't stress the importance of driveabilty, reliabilty, fuel consumption, and longevity that a good tune will yeild.
The amount of times I've liked the way that my car runs, till we try something new, then 'Oh! How DID I like that before?'

I'm looking forward to hearing about your build as you go.

Sounds cool! What kind of timeframe are you talking Stratton? I'm ready to do something with my ve and I'd like to see your results.

skip the SSAC and get the 20v header. I think Greg can get it with a 3" flex section.

If the ssac header is cheaper, id say get that. Im not overly impressed with the 20v headers, the factory secondarys have a cat in them, and are not a particularly good collector, and although everyone looks under the bonnet of my car and thinks they look massive, they are double skined, and not really all that big inside. I want to take mine off at some stage, but one of the manifold nuts is being a biarch and i cant get them off at the mo.

I would support that...

Go for it Stratton, I love my VE man, I wouldnt trade it for the world. Im a boost lover at heart, but there is nothing like a quick N/A 4 banger.
