Not 100% sure but...
Well, I applied voltage to my solenoids, they both click rather loudly, so they're working. I can hear the changeover (only when outside the car listening to the engine) - but I dont feel a darn thing when driving.

Perhaps there's a chance the allan key thing is stripped, and that's why i'm kind of unimpressed with the vvl?

...hmm..

Maybe you can take off the solenoid housing and clean it with a solvent, just in case there may be a clog in the passages. Are you using one switch for both intake & exhaust? Are you sure you don't feel anything at all? Wiring's all good? Hoping you have enough oil pressure to activate the cams at your switch point. I had something similar but no oil went through the solenoid passages even though the solenoids and wiring was good. When it's working properly you will feel it but not as hard as with 16ve or N1s.

Wiring is all good.

Regarding cleaning the solenoids, can I use carb cleaner for that?

Regarding oil pressure, I dont know the oil pressure I guess until I install my aftermarket gauges - what's a reasonable pressure to expect? I also read about an allen key thing that you can see when you take off the solenoids that gets stripped? Anyone remember where that conversation is, I can't find it and I'm sick of driving without any vvl, I payed for the motor I want to play with it!

update - just hooked up my oil pressure gauge, it reads approx 25 at idle and climbs past 100 at 3k rpm, so I guess that means the oil pressure is fine.

in my case my solenoids where clogged in oil after i cleaned them my VVL started working. Your oil pressure is just fine. Did you tune your ECU? for VE when i installed my engine and started playing with it i didn't feel anything until i tuned the ECU. So if you can hear the change over its suppose to be working, specially the exhaust one the sound is HUGEEEEE. When i took my car for a tune i did a drive first with the stock ecu with the wideband installed and the reading where very rich on low rpms and leaned all the way from 5k over and didn't feel anything when the vvl kicked. Good luck!

the ecu is a calum basic, Im using a msd 8969 - the solenoids click for sure when I jump them.

I was wondering joel if you could hear the huge difference with a stock exhaust? I have a ssac to the cat the rest is stock. you REALLY have to be listening to hear any change when the changeover occurs, and really you can't tell unless you're looking directly at the 8969 when the dot changes to high cam to connect the slight sound change with the xover.

what is the standard a/f ratio at idle, I can check it with my ecutalk cable/program

You need a wideband to check the a/f ratios.. Also get some aftermarket exhaust that should help a lot.. I bet your vvl is workin fine..

i believe your problem is the exhaust the VE demands BIG exhaust thats why you cant hear it. In my case i have my exhaust manually cut-out and when the exhaust is closed and pass throw stock pipe the exhaust xover is almost nothing compared to intake exhaust and other wise if the exhaust is opened. And about power feeling with VVL on stock exhaust believe me it should S*CK the exhaust makes almost all the power in VE.

Recommendation CHANGE THE EXHAUST

Also agree with this

Why would I need a wideband, is the ecu/calumsult software no good to check a/f ratios?
